Boy or Girl

Am I Having a A Boy or a Girl?

Many moms-to-be, right after finding out we are pregnant, wonder if we are having a boy or a girl. Some parents-to-be are patient and can wait for the surprise of finding out when the baby is born. But for the many women who don’t want to wait, there are many methods, scientific and traditional, that claim to answer your question: am I having a boy or a girl?

How Is A Baby’s Sex Determined?
Well, the Dads have the say here–he determines the baby’s gender. If the father provides an X chromosome, the baby will be female, and if he supplies a Y chromosome, the baby will be male.

Mothers can provide only an X chromosome, so they do not have the same influence over gender. Studies show that there is nearly an equal number of sperm containing X chromosomes as containing Y chromosomes so you have an equal chance of having a boy or a girl for each conception.

Why even find out my baby’s sex ahead of time?

There really is no medical necessity for finding out before birth. And, not knowing certainly adds excitement to your pregnancy and delivery. However, knowing your baby’s sex before birth can give a parent some peace of mind when planning. Some common reasons for finding out baby’s sex include:

  • picking out a name early on
  • getting clothes specific to a boy or girl
  • planning nursery decorations
  • planning celebrations and events like circumcision
  • testing for certain genetic defects that may be prone to a particular sex

There are also plenty of theories and methods on how to pick the sex of your baby, as well as how to tell what you are having.
